No one tells you the grief you that you will feel when your pet passes away. People try to console you with hugs and thoughts and words like "it gets better with time." It doesn't really help. Everyone means well, but it doesn't change anything. What could it possibly change?
It's been two months since Brandy~puppy the Super Dog went to Puppy Dog Heaven. To say I miss her,
doesn't really tell you the story. I know she was sick. I know she was dying from the lymphoma. I know she couldn't have lived much longer. My heart still breaks thinking about it. She was my best friend and making the decision to end her suffering is a decision I never want to make ever again.
The grief isn't about just crying and mourning her life. It's small things. It's not having to lock up the garbage. It's no one to try to steal your blanket. It's no one begging for the last bite of your sandwich. It all becomes so routine that you don't realize it until you are about to toss the sandwich in the air that you realize she's not there to get it. It's that moment that grabs you and clinches your heart.
With time it gets easier. I don't think it's because you don't feel the grief. I think it's because you just learn how to deal with the grief. At first, people wanted to hug me. A hug would bring on uncontrollable sobbing for a half hour so I refused hugs. After a week, everyone assumed I'd be me again....be normal again. But there is this big gaping hole that nothing else fills.
When a person dies there are cards and flowers and people bring you food. You know what happens when a beloved pet dies? Nothing. Sure people say things to you. But nothing happens. They make cards for these occasions....I know they do....I've seen them. I didn't receive any. I think that really hurts too. Brandy was an amazing dog who never believed she was a dog. Anyone who knew her would know that. I certainly expected more from family and especially those who've lost pets before. The family who did really care lived too far away to help us. I don't know how a single person could go through this.
Gradually, Brandy's belongings have been cleaned and packed. Some things got thrown out because they were wrecked or dirty. I've filled her Groovy Dog dish with little red heart stones and put it on the shelf near where she used to eat. Other belongings are waiting for me to assemble a shadow box when I have the time to do it. We sold her kennel aka house a few weeks back. It was sold to a woman who needed to train her dog. Yesterday, I gave two dog dishes and a bandana to a student of mine who just adopted a cockapoo male puppy.
Even though we've been making these strides....she's still gone and we still miss her. I mentioned to our contractor how our walls are covered with dog slobber. He called that 'memories'. We sure do have tons of those. It's spring and the snow is just good for trying to scale the mountain of snow in the back yard or for traipsing through the mud and tracking it into the house. Except there's no one to do it anymore.
And that's what no one tells you....is that your heart still breaks.

Groovy Dog
After seeing an ad in the newspaper on January 7th, 2000 we drove to Weldon, SK and adopted Brandy from a family whose last name was Haldane. She was the last puppy. She was born November 11th, 1999.
A dog for the millennium. She was my Christmas present that year. She's been a gift every year since.
Through our 14 years together she has taught me some valuable lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Greet every loved one as if you haven't seen them in years. We should be excited for those in our lives and we never know how long they are really there. Everything can change quickly. Never let a day go by without telling a loved one you care.
Nothing counter height is yours. If you leave your drink unattended or drop food they belong to the dog. In fact, nothing on the counter may be yours either. That is especially true if it is slightly dangling over the edge of the counter or too close to the edge. Leaving a steak on an open barbecue is definitely an invitation. Always push the chair in to the table when you leave or you might be missing something off your plate when you return. Also, none of the blankets in the house are yours. They all belong to the dog who will promptly curl up on them and never give them up.
Embrace the change of the seasons. Stop and smell the flowers. Eat peas straight from the garden. Stomp in the autumn leaves. Plop your feet in the puddles. Feel the mud between your toes. Dash out the door on the first snow fall and frolic in the flakes.
Take time for yourself. Indulge in a spa day. Have your hair done. Get a message. Have a pedicure. Buy some new clothes. You will feel like a new dog.....er, person after.
Breakable Christmas ornaments have no business hanging on a tree. This is especially true if they are hanging down low because they will fall onto the floor and crash into a gazillion pieces. Some breakable ornaments may be hung at a higher level however, the tree may fall over at any time smashing them to smithereens.
Go for car rides. Travel. See the world. Drive with the windows down and let your hair blow in the wind. Dip your toes in the water. Find a new spot and make it yours. Enjoy the sights. Smell the air. Be inquisitive. Escape.
Protect your turf. Keep an eye out on your neighbourhood. Keep watch. Make sure no one is sneaking around or messing with your stuff. Patrol your yard and make sure everything is as it should be.
Remember when it's garbage day. Always empty the garbage. Inevitably a dog will Houdini itself into the garbage under the sink and spread it through the house if you don't take care of the garbage in your life. This may promote the installation of child proof locks on said kitchen cabinet but a dog is always aware and one must ensure the door is always firmly closed.

Accidents happen. Sometimes you poop on the floor but there's no point being upset. Yes it's embarrassing but don't dwell on it. Clean up your mess and move on. No one else thinks about it anymore so why should you. Everyone makes mistakes.
Be loyal and love deeply.
Know when it's time to go.
My little Brandy~puppy the Super Dog was diagnosed with a form of lymphoma on December 27th, 2013 and after a short rebound she went to Puppy Dog Heaven on January 27th, 2014, where she was greeted by her friends, Gonzo, Gunther, Lucy, & her mortal enemy Squeak the Cat. She was The Mom's angel and The Dad's fur seal and will be greatly missed but forever in our hearts.
Mommy & Daddy love you baby puppy. More than you will ever know.

Day Trip & Picnic
I can't take the credit for coming up with the idea for packing a lunch and going on a day trip to Lake Diefenbaker. It was all Hubby. He mentioned last week that we should.....and we did! We packed the car with sandwiches, chips, carrots, water and lot's more water and even more water, peaches.....oh and water.
We headed out on the highway.....
.......looking for adventure.....
Brandy~puppy the Super Dog came with us too. As soon as she realized we were going somewhere and we had her leash and some dog food, she was raring to go.
Lake Diefenbaker is a very interesting place. The main attraction is the Gardiner Dam. Gardiner Dam stands 64 meters high with the ability to discharge 7,500 cubic meters per second. The Gardiner Dam was the largest earth-filled dam in the world and continues today, 36 years after completion, to regulate the flow of water into the South Saskatchewan River. The South Saskatchewan River is the river which runs through Saskatoon. See this link for more information: http://town.outlook.sk.ca/skytrail/skytrail-4.html
Across from the Dam was a visitors area. There were picnic tables, a beach and an information centre that had a place called Top of The Dam Cafe that had burgers and ice cream.
We got back in the car as dogs were not allowed in the visitors area. Brandy thought that was very wrong.
We found a Provincial Campground called Danielson. The lady in the kiosk let us in even though we are supposed to purchase Provincial Campground day passes. We drove through the loops of the campground which were very spacious and nice. They were electrified and had really nice washrooms, including showers. On one of the loops was a camp kitchen so we decided that would be the perfect place to have our lunch.
When we were leaving Danielson we asked for directions to another campground called Douglas. We were able to tour that one as well and found the campsites even nicer because they had more trees. The amenities weren't as nice, but then it's supposed to be 'roughing' isn't it?
Our next stop was the town of Elbow. The main street had quaint little shops, a school house museum and a sod house. It looked like an interesting place to visit if a day turned cloudy or rainy and camping wouldn't be so enjoyable.
Elbow, SK has a marina and yacht club. It was very cool to see such large boats. You'd need a large water craft for the size of Lake Diefenbaker, but it looks like you'd also need lot's of money too!
Since it was already getting late and it would take us at least an hour and a half to drive home.....we headed for home. It was a very fun car ride, adventure and picnic! I think next summer if we camp in this area we will have no problem finding things to occupy our time. We barely scratched the surface of what attractions are at Lake Diefenbaker.

Sand Bucket Update 2 ~ A Weekend with Family ~
On Friday I scheduled a substitute teacher so Brandy and I could pick Hubby up from work at 4:30. Hubby's "Brodder", Sister in Law & their grandson was visiting the In Laws for the last week. Also, Hubby's Sister's two children were spending the month at their grandparents. It was important to make the trip while everyone was home.
It is a 4 hour drive south east. We stopped after driving for 1 hour in a town called Humbolt. I had coupons for A&W. We had two-can-dine-for-$9.99. It was so yummy! It was two teen burgers with fries and a drink. We had to share some fries with Brandy.
On the way we listened to 620 CKRM and the pregame show. It was the first Rider preseason game. It made the trip go really fast!
When we arrived the TV was quickly turned on so we could watch the second half of the football game. The Riders beat the Edmonton Eskimos 31 - 24. WAHOO!
It was a very rainy weekend, but Saturday afternoon it stopped long enough for the boys to get outside and find something to do. Brodder in Law got some guns out and set up water bottles. The guys loved...LOVED shooting the water bottles and soon ran out of targets and had to switch to bricks! They laughed that when the bullet hit the brick there would be a poof of dust. Hubby called it "shoosting."
Baron is Brodder in Law's 8 year old German Shepherd. Baron does not know he is a big dog. He has the friendliest face and it is so expressive too! He wasn't sure what to make of Brandy. They'd met before.....twice even, but it's been a long time between visits. There was a slow motion chase in the family room. Picture this....Baron trying to get away from Brandy by walking away with Brandy trotting behind panting all the way! In the end, they were BFF's and even shared each others dog food and water dishes.
Sunday was the last day of our visit. Hubby's Grandpa came for lunch. Grandpa turned 95 a few months back but is still as spry as ever. You should have seen his face light up when we mentioned there was pie! I'm pretty sure he had both the coconut cream and banana cream!
It was a good visit but it went much too quickly. We gave the kiddos gifts because we don't normally give presents except for Christmas and even then we are never together. Nathan will be 10 and is devouring Hubby's Hardy Boys books. We took 6 more books for him. For Ava, we bought a toy pony that walked. Cole was the lucky recipient of Hubby's baseball glove and ball. He was so surprised with his gift! It was awesome to see their happy faces.
We set out for home and had fairly good weather the whole way. I was happy that I only had the 4 hour drive and not the 3 day drive like Brodder in Law. We made vows that we'd go visit them next year for sure. I'm pretty excited to think that we'll maybe hopefully be able to make the trip to Oregon and Idaho!

10 Thought Tuesday ~ Dog Eared ~
I wanted to name my blog "commandeered" but I'm a dog. Doggandeered just didn't have the right ring to it. Dog Eared sounds much betterer.
And yes....I've dog eared The Mom's blog to record my own thoughts.
1. pant.....pant....pant.....
2. CHEERIO'S!!!! OMG Cheerio's!!! There's some on the counter! *jumps* I can't reach them! OMG it's going to drive me crazy! CHEERIO'S!!! *lays down to wait for Cheerio's to drop off counter*
3. *scratches ear*
4. *runs away from The Mom because she has that Ear Cleaning look about her*
5. IT'S THE MAIL MAN! NO IT'S THE GARBAGE TRUCK! THE MAILMAN! GARBAGE TRUCK! WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF *pant* WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF
6. *lays down on blue carpet* *sighs* Zzzzz....
7. The Mom loosened my collar today. It was getting a little snug. I seem to be very furry. It makes me hot. *pant* The Mom says Saturday I get to go to the spa. *wags tail*
8. Sometimes after a trip to the spa The Mom makes me wear my red sweater. I like my red sweater even though it makes me look like a Montreal Canadiennes hockey fan. I wish I had a green sweater. The Dad says they cost to much. Maybe if I saved enough dog cookies I'd be able to get one.
9. On the weekend The Dad likes to watch cars going around in a circle. He makes The Mom and me wait until the end. Sometimes there's something called the "lucky dog." The Mom says I get the Lucky Dog Award. *wags tail*
10. *licks netbook screen.* Nope. It doesn't taste like Cheerio's or cookies or chicken & rice. Pfft.

Brandy ~ jacked
The Dad calls me Ayne Joe [Angel]. |
This only means two things. I'm going to the spa or I'm going to the doctor.
I laid in the hallway shaking with anxiety over the possibilities!
Mom was just about to leave when the guy who lives in the basement came and gave Mom a piece of paper. They talked and laughed.
Then Mom got my leash off the shelf of the closet and I couldn't contain myself anymore. I jumped and leaped all over the place while Mom struggled to get it tied on me. I couldn't help myself. *wags tail*
Then when we started off in the car I got all confused. Mom wasn't driving towards the spa or the doctor. Where was she taking me? We drove down a road with lot's of tall buildings and people walking. Then we went over a bridge and past a building Mom said was the University. It seemed like maybe we were going on a trip....but I didn't remember any suitcases or food being packed.
To my surprise we did go to the doctor!!!! And waiting inside was another dog just like me! Well almost. It was black and white and had a weird haircut. The Assistant said their groomer was training for a competition and used their dog for practice. I thought it looked like it would get very matted and with those long shaggy ears how would you eat or drink water without dragging them through everything? I'm glad Mom doesn't do that to me.
I was soooo embarrassed! With all the excitement I did something I never NEVER do.
I made a squishy on the floor.
We sure had to wait a long time. *pants* Another dog came in and sat with us. She was nice. She was a big dog and had lot's of spunk.
It's a lot more fun when the waiting room has dogs instead of cats.
Finally Dr. Powell called us in. He just back from vacation. I said "RUFF!" Which of course means....never go away again because all hell broke loose! The Mom and Dr. Powell talked about all sorts of things and he looked in my ears and at my butt and at the skin on my back. I didn't understand all of it but what I think Dr. Powell said was that all the pills The Mom sneaks to me in NutraGrain bars are good for me and doing things to make me healthy.
I wished the pills came in bacon flavour.
When we were done The Mom made me sit in the car by myself. When she came out she had a bag of stuff in orange bottles and bag of something that smelled really yummy and had carrots on it. I tried licking it but it only tasted like paper.
Before I new it, we were back home!
I ran in the house and drank some water. Then The Mom got the bag with the carrots on it and opened it and gave me one. COOKIES!!!! COOKIES!!!!
I may have drooled a little.

Ten Thought Tuesday ~ Christmas Present ~
Yes, I am well aware it is late late Wednesday. Give me a break. I've been busy fa-la-la-ing and eggnogging and rumming it up.
Hubby and
I have had a very exciting 2012! In
April, we took the trip of our lifetime [so far] to New York City. We were there for 10 incredible days over
Easter. Our hotel was in Queens, we rode
the subway every day and saw the sights from bus tours, river cruises and a
helicopter ride! There are too many
highlights to list but as you can see from the above picture seeing the Statue
of Liberty was amazing. We also made it
to Rockefeller Plaza, The Guggenheim, The Museum of Natural History, Central
Park and Yankee Stadium. The food was
incredible. There is nothing like a New
York pizza and we will never forget the Italian pastries. Mmmm….Cannoli!
Brandy~puppy celebrated her 13th birthday in
November. She’s had an interesting
year. Last Christmas she underwent
throat surgery for laryngeal paralysis.
It was very scary for us all. But
she recovered very well although her voice has changed. Now her bark sounds a little more like a gangster! I know that we are on bonus time but Brandy continues to bring happiness into our
lives with her spunky personality.
Hubby continues to work at the Fedorated Co-Op. I’ve got another full teaching schedule at
the Saskatoon Academy of Music. On
weekends you can find us cheering on the Riders, going for car rides and
running errands.
What will be in store for us for 2013? We’re hoping to go on another epic vacation
and spend more time camping and fishing.
Saskatchewan is a beautiful place in the summer and we are so fortunate
to work and play here.
We hope our newsletter finds you happy, healthy and full of
holiday spirit! We wish the very best to
you and yours for the next year and always!

This Blog has Been Dog-Jacked
Brandy approx. February 2000 |
I've had a ruff year. Last year I had throat surgery for Laryngeal Paralysis. My ears are always stinky and itchy. And in July I got an intestinal virus. Mom worries about me all the time. She doesn't like it that Dad doesn't worry enough.
Today I got to go for a car ride to the Central Animal Hospital. I thought maybe we were going to the groomer but knew something was up when the car didn't turn the right way. I got a little worried. But then when we got to the doctors there was a black lab in the waiting room and I forgot about being worried.
There's weren't any cats there today. Cats are my mortal enemy.
Dr. Powell put me on a table. I had trouble standing because my paws are really furry. I almost fell off once. Dr. Powell looked at my eyes, ears and felt my tummy. Then he tested the moisture in my eyes by putting these paper strips in my eyes.
I didn't like that. I retaliated by pooping on his floor.
Dr. Powell says I have an ear infection. I got medicine and ear drops. He told Mom to clean my eyes with Saline like she uses to clean her contacts and recommended some eye drops that she can buy at Shoppers Drug Mart. Dr. Powell said I'm in good health and can expect to live until I'm 17!
I think I really lucked out. Dr. Powell said not to clean my ears! HURRAY! *wags tail*
We have to go back next Friday on Mom's Birthday Eve for a check up.
When we got home Mom gave me the medicine in a piece of bread. Then she squirted the drops in my ears.
I didn't like that. I retaliated by laying in the middle of the backyard until Mom learned her lesson.
That cookie sure did taste good when I came inside! *wags tail*

Saskatoon Adventures
Butterhorns - Traeger's Bakery Miller Avenue Saskatoon |
Yesterday, we ventured all the way over to the south side and into Homesense. I purchased a new kitchen clock. The previous clock has become gummed up with grease and after trying to clean it.....and sticking to it.....and trying to make it pass off as clean I gave up. The hands are a knife and fork and the pendulum is a spoon! I <3 it.
Last week, I did surgery on the lazy susan cabinet. Rather, I performed an amputation by totally removing the lazy susan. She was so lazy she collapsed from the weight of holding up "stuff" and I suppose if my job since 1974 was to hold stuff up I'd probably drop from exhaustion too. So, today Hubby and I visited some kitchen cabinet stores....Superior Cabinets, Kitchen Craft, & Tait. The best service by far was at Superior while we found the right wood style for us at Tait BUT after scanning through the Superior pamphlets they too had that same wood. It's actually a laminate or vaneer called Zebrano. The one we liked had a grey stain to it. I can picture the lower cabinets in this while the upper cabinets can be white. We even found a great countertop to go with our ideas.
We are sort of dreaming here. I don't necessarily think we can afford to do kitchen reno's right away. We have other pressing expenses such as replacing the aluminum sliding windows...also circa 1974. But it was fun to see what was available and find all kinds of drawer inserts and cabinet options.
This evening we took a drive to the University of Saskatchewan. We like a trail that starts near where former Prime Minister Diefenbaker and his wife are laid to rest. In fact, it's right behind the Diefenbaker Centre. We took Brandy~puppy along for the ride. She was super excited and barked a lot at people jogging and walking and such.
Brandy on the look-out for joggers. |

You Should Do This More Often.....
.....he said.
I picked my jaw up off the floor.
"You seem so happy after your pedicure and if it makes you feel so good and be so happy then you should treat yourself more often."
Holy Mother of Meatloaf.
Who is this guy and what has he done with my husband? Never mind! I'll keep this guy!
But he's right. It was freaking amazing. The spa is called OHara's and is clear on the other side of the city in where most of the seniors tend to live. As a result my Pedicurist said that a lot of her clientele was aged.
She put on soothing oceany music. I told her it needed seagulls because there are seagulls at the ocean. She said seagulls are annoying when you're trying to relax. I suppose so.
I soaked. I had a sugar scrub. I got pumiced and massaged and then the most epic part of the whole experience happened.....the paraffin wax.
*drools*
I have never felt anything quite so heavenly.
Well.....almost.
Then she painted my piggies with a colour of my choosing.....OPI Extra Va-Vaganza which was part of the Burlesque collection. My feets are super sparkly!
*sigh*
I really really liked the Pedicurist. We really hit it off. By the end I had her convinced she needed to go shopping at Pennington's for a dress, cute lingerie and shoes! I said, "Hey, aren't you the one that's supposed to up sell me?"
It was awesome. I'm planning on going back in August for a manicure.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Brandy~puppy the Super Dog gets to go to the spa tomorrow. She is in desperate need of a new hair do.
I've been slightly worried lately and honestly, since her near death experience last November and subsequent surgery.....I tend to worry too much. Anyhow, she's been a little off this week. Hubby says I shouldn't worry and there's nothing we can do. He's partly right. It just breaks my heart that my little baby pup is on bonus time.
She's not sick. That's true. She's just been picky about her food this week. And her potty breaks have been a little "loose." But she's obviously not in pain. I worry that I wouldn't be able to tell if she was in pain. But her tail still goes and I guess that's a good sign. I suspect that she just ate something that didn't agree with her and with a spunky doggie you never know what that might be. We were at the farm last weekend after all and she wasn't in my sights at all times.
I did see her chase a large frog under a spruce tree.
Anyhow, last night Brandy got very excited when I opened the door to retrieve the mail. We don't often use the front door. She isn't tall enough to exactly see out the door and that's when Hubby got the bright idea to take the cushions off the couch and stack them to make the doggie more comfortable.
Why didn't we think of this before?
This is what it's come to!
Note: This was a blog post from July 27th. We later took Brandy to the vet and found out she had an intestinal virus and our vet said she should have been sicker than she was. She was on meds for a week and is almost good as new. Although some test results told us we may be looking at kidney disease down the road.

Easy Like Friday Morning
Some days are
as easy as breathing. Other days are like breathing clay. Yesterday
was a clay day. This morning I woke up around 9am
to take my thyroid pill and then hit snooze on the alarm. I know this
sounds incredibly late to a lot of you but my lifestyle is anything but
normal. My late work nights and sleeping habits dictate a rather lazy
morning ritual.
The next time my alarm sounded John Gormley the local radio guy was talking about the New Saskatchewan versus the Old. I rolled my eyes and turned over. Its a no win discussion.
Usually at this point I sit up and see Brandy and say in a high pitched voice... "its a puppeeeeee!" And this is the time that Brandy looks over at me and stretches and has the expression...just 10 more minutes mom. But i grab her and scratch her tummy and give her hugs and kisses before proclaiming us lazy bones and jumping out of bed.
In the kitchen I reheat morning coffee and oatmeal while Brandy watches from the hallway. Even though her bowl is full of Purina chicken and rice she is eager to have oatmeal too. We have breakfast and watch Regis.....strike that.....Live with Kelly.
Every morning is that easy for me. I'm pretty lucky.
This afternoon I had to pay the lab vampires a visit. I only have enough synthroid for 2 weeks. I counted. I could have sworn I'd make it to Christmas, but oh well! Nothing I can do about it! So I stopped at the lab about 1:30. The techs were so nice and not busy at all and actually eager to chat. Maybe it was a slow day? At any rate.....I was in and out in a jiffy.
So today instead of going down to the Starbucks in the Safeway down the hall I decided instead to treat myself to a trek across town to Pier One.
Now I don't know what was going on today.....well actually I kind of do..... School was out for the day due to a teacher in-service AND many stores were having early Boxing Day sales to compete with Black Friday across the border.
The parking lot at Preston Crossing where Pier One is located was a zoo.
Pier One was so magical. I walked inside and stood in Christmas awe. I indulged in several Christmas Tree ornaments. I particularly love the old world type. The ones with the reflector glass or indentations. There were so many pretty things and once I made it to the cashier my bank account [Hubby's really] was $60 lighter. One of the items I bought is a salt and pepper set that looks like coffee and donuts. Now, I ask you....me of all people....how could I resist THAT?
Back out into traffic I was. I made it to work in one piece. I used the coffee machine for a mochacinno. It did not taste like Starbucks.
My working day was as it usually is and I got to leave early due to a cancellation. When I got home Hubby had ordered pizza for supper! It arrived about 5 minutes later. We chatted and ate and had a nice evening.
Most of my days are like this. I don't have a lot of stress in my life. I know I'm fortunate and I'm also thankful for everything I have in my life.
I guess its about time I rip off that band-aid from this afternoon!
Music to a Dog's Ears
Brandy~Puppy
the Super Dog, seen above, basking in the sunshine filtering through
the living room windows. Yes, it's a Dog's Life. Eat. Drink. Lounge
around all day. Frolic in the back yard. Chase some birds and if you're
lucky a pesky feline.
Brandy
is a 7 year old Cocker Spaniel almost pure bread. Her Great Grandfather
was a champion show dog. Brandy, as I noted in a previous Blog, is The Love of My Life....shh, don't tell Hubby!
The
thing about Brandy is that she doesn't know she's a dog. Even though
she can't speak English, she can spell. "C-A-R" and you've got a 30lb
ball of fur barking and racing around with anticipation. Say "Walk"
along with the word "Go" and you've got a problem. "Cheerio's" and she
won't leave you alone until she gets some.
Then
there's her garbage fetish. The second we leave the house, Brandy goes
to the kitchen, opens the cabinet under the sink, and removes every bit
of garbage from the pail down to the very last coffee ground. It's been
such a problem that we installed child proof locks to deal with it. Yet,
I think she knows to look to see if the lock thingy is attached or not.
If that white knobby thing is there...yippee! they've forgotten and
it's a garbage frenzy.
What sets Brandy apart from other dogs is that she is musical AND she has an ear for certain kinds of music.
One
day, I was playing my piano. Just songs and pieces that I enjoy. I
played some pop tunes and nothing happened, but when I started on the
classical.....a very low beyond mournful sound was emitted from my
puppy's mouth. It is a sound that is just impossible to put into words.
It wasn't a painful yowl. It was somewhat melodic. Harmonious.
Let's test this. I thought.
Elton John........ Nothing.
Scarlatti.
aR-aWWWooooooooooooR.
Billy Joel.......... Nothing.
Diabelli.
AAAwwooooooo-aWWooooooRRRRR
Yup!
Brandy~Puppy The Super Dog can sing. She can spell, she helps me to
keep the kitchen floor swept and I love her to bits. Kibbles and Bits
that is!

The Love of My Life
For Christmas 1999,
my husband promised me a Cocker Spaniel puppy. We looked at pet stores
and several breeders, but could not find a single puppy. Then on January
7th, 2000 we found an ad in the newspaper for a Cocker Spaniel puppy.
The last one left.
Hubby wanted a male dog. He said we'd name him Brutus. I just wanted a dog.
Hubby wanted a male dog. He said we'd name him Brutus. I just wanted a dog.
We had to drive an hour to a small town to have a look. All the way, Hubby said, "we are just looking".
We
arrived at the Haldane's, a very nice family. They showed us to their
utility room, where in a box made out of wood and lined with newsprint
and a red blanket, hopped a very excited little angel. "It's a female",
they said, "born on Novemer 11th, Remembrance Day." My husband was
giddy, "can I hold her?" She was just a little bundle of fur and she
snuggled into him and gave him puppy dog kisses. He was immediately
wrapped round her paw.
We
paid the $200 for her and took her off to her new home. They had given
us some left over puppy food and assured us she was potty trained. On
the drive home, the puppy continued to give puppy kisses to Hubby as he
would try to wiggle away from her.
The
Haldane's had said she didn't have a name and just referred to her as
Puppy. We named her Brandy~puppy. We already had a soft plush bed and
some chew toys for her. But, we were not prepared for a puppy.
This
was a Sunday night and we both had to work the next day. How would we
contain her? My parents volunteered a child's playpen. It was old, with
wooden bars, so we lined it with cardboard. Surely, a little puppy so
sweet would never be able to get out.
She
got out.
The cardboard was not in any way strong enough to contain
Brandy~puppy the Super Dog. We would let her roam free, but we had to
keep her from going to the second floor. We piled the packed boxes of
our Christmas tree and ornaments at the bottom of the stairs.
It was not enough. Hubby would come come to find Brandy~puppy the Wonder Dog sitting happily at the top of the stairs.
We
bought a kennel. Brandy's house, we called it. She loved it. "Go in you
house!" we'd say. In she would run, legs flying in all directions,
waiting for a milk bone.
Now,
Brandy is now going on 13 years old. She is able to roam our house and we no longer
use the kennel. She thinks she is human. She brings immense joy and
happiness to our hearts. She has had some health problems over the last year but she remains the love of my life.
